Celebrating 90 years of serving fish n chips
This year marks a remarkable milestone for Two Gates Fisheries, as we reach 90 years in business. Since opening its doors in 1935, the much-loved fish and chip shop has been at the heart of the community, proudly serving generations of locals with one of Britain’s most iconic dishes.
A Shop Built for Tradition
Two Gates Fisheries was founded by brothers Roland and Douglas Saunders in 1935. Purpose-built as a fish and chip shop, it quickly became a favourite with Shafton families. Over the decades, the shop has stood the test of time, providing not just great food, but also a sense of tradition and continuity for the village.
The Saunders brothers’ story is as remarkable as the shop itself. During the Second World War, Roland was called up to serve and fought on the Normandy Front, where he was commended for his efforts. Douglas, who remained at home due to a hernia, kept the business running. When word reached Roland that his brother needed support, he returned to Shafton to help run the shop, ensuring its future for the generations to come.
90 Years, 90 Customers, 90p
To celebrate our 90th anniversary, we hosted a special day for our loyal customers. The first 90 people through the door were treated to cod and chips for just 90p, a nostalgic nod to the shop’s history. For the rest of the day, customers enjoyed 20% off everything on the menu, keeping the celebration alive from opening to close.
The celebrations were made even sweeter thanks to our long-time suppliers. Dennis Crooks Fish Merchants and T Quality Ltd proudly sponsored the day, even bringing along a generous chocolate cake to share with customers. The fish for the day came in fresh from Whitby, caught by a British trawler off the coast of Scotland and delivered straight to Shafton by Dennis Crooks Fish Merchants.
A Legacy Worth Celebrating
Few businesses can boast such history, resilience, and community spirit as Two Gates Fisheries. From surviving wartime challenges to embracing modern tastes, the shop has always remained true to its roots: serving quality fish and chips with a smile.
Celebrating our 90th anniversary, it isn’t just marking years in business, it’s celebrating 90 years of family tradition, local pride, and community spirit.
Here’s to the next chapter in the story of Shafton’s favourite fish and chip shop.
A big thank you to our amazing staff, generous suppliers and customers from 1935 right up to present day.
